Something went wrong!
Hang in there while we get back on track
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:00:00 - 00:00:46
Thank you for coming. My name is Sarah Michelle and I will be moderating this discussion. And before we jump in really quick, there's a QR code up on the screen that will take you to Slido and you will get into Slido and it's a mobile app, so you'll just see it on your phone and you're going to submit questions there. I'm not stupid. We're not putting an open mic in this room when you have three, four people up here that could hire you. I'm not that stupid. So we're going to actually do it that way. Now, know that I'm going to do my best to get to your questions, but we have put together, we think, some really deeper questions.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:00:46 - 00:01:32
So we aren't going to do a lot of the what should speakers not do? And do, you know, kind of get into some of the basics. We're going to go a little higher level. But if you have something that is not being covered, by all means, put it in there. We're going to do our best to get to it. So we're going to kick off our session with what my friend Kristen Arnold, who is in this room, who is the queen of panels, if you don't know her, calls the Newlywed Game. So basically these guys were all given a whiteboard. I asked them a question before we started and they are going to do a one word response as our way of kicking things off. So the opening question is when reviewing a speaker's material, looking at your website, your demo reel, maybe your one sheet, which we're going to talk about that.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:01:32 - 00:02:14
Do one sheets even need to happen anymore? I don't think so. But what's the fastest way a speaker can unintentionally signal they're not at the right fit, even if their content is strong? What's an immediate red flag that makes you move on? We're going to start with my lovely Megan right next door to me here. Megan Denehart. If you don't know her, she has over 20 years experience as event strategist and expertise in event design. How many of you have worked with Megan in the room? Okay, well, most of you, all of you want to. So Megan has been with ASAE for many years. She ran their meetings department. She left to move to California with her family and they said not so fast.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:02:14 - 00:02:39
And she's still contracting with them. She's also for California association executives. She is their event strategist there. And she also in her spare time has her own company where she partners with Lots of event partners producing events. And Megan, what is your one or two words that represents your instant disqualifier when you're looking at speaker.
Megan Denhardt, CAE
00:02:39 - 00:02:53
Oh, okay. Thank you. Too much jargon. And then the really, really, really, really extraordinarily long trophy list of all about you. And I know you're important and you have to show your accolades. That's awesome. But I think there's a special way to do it, so those are mine.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:02:54 - 00:03:23
Awesome. Okay, great. Next up is David Kleiman. David is the co founder of elx, the Event Leaders Exchange. It's an invitation only community for global heads of like let's just say Google, you know, if I were to say the top 5,500 companies in the world. In order to get into his network, your annual event portfolio needs to be at 10 billion.
David Kliman, CMM
00:03:23 - 00:03:47
All right, no, sorry. So it has to be 15 million in event spend, $500 million in corporate. It's all corporate revenue collectively are 252 members. Buy. $10 billion a year in event spend. So just to be clear.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:03:47 - 00:04:12
Yeah, thanks for clarifying that. So he's also the president of the climate group specializing customer advisory board. Another really cool fact is Meeting Professionals association or international MPI has named David one of the 50 most influential members in the event industry. David. Yeah, give it up for that. What's your one or two disqualifiers, David?
David Kliman, CMM
00:04:12 - 00:04:38
Okay, I have three generic. If we can see it on YouTube, you're not getting past go egotistical. If it's all about you, it's not a match. It's gotta be about you in the audience. And if it's a transaction and not a trusted relationship, it's not gonna work.
Sarah Michel, CSP
00:04:38 - 00:04:41
So speak a little more to that. What would tell you? It's transaction.
