Speaker A

All right, can you share your name and a little bit about yourself?

Bonita Gooseberry

My name is Bonita Gooseberry, and I've been living here in Milwaukee for, like, 25 years. I'm a 58 year old female. I'm a triplet, so they're two twins to me. I have been a mental health consultant for a long time in Milwaukee. I have LPC license, but now I'm having some health challenges, so I haven't been working in the last year because of the health challenges that I'm facing.

Speaker A

Okay. Okay. What are some of your interests in activities, like recreational activities that you.

Bonita Gooseberry

I go to the y and work out, like, three times a week, and I do a lot of church activities.

Speaker A

Okay, cool, cool. How do you typically spend a day. So, in 24 hours, what does that.

Bonita Gooseberry

Look like for you in 24 hours? Usually I spend my morning trying to get up and do some type of exercise. Then in the afternoon, I usually maybe on the phone, engaging in conversations with other people on the prayer line or things of that nature during the daytime, and then in the evening times, I usually go to church activities.

Speaker A

Okay. Okay. Are there any routines or hobbies that are particularly important to you?

Bonita Gooseberry

Yes.

Speaker A

What about.

Bonita Gooseberry

I have a basket business where I do Easter baskets. I do mother's day, I do father's day. I do all this. So I spend a lot of my hobby time on the weekends doing baskets, and my living room is full of Easter baskets now. Great.

Speaker A

I love that. Looking back, what are some life experiences you think have shaped you the most?

Bonita Gooseberry

Going on the heart transplant list?

Speaker A

Wow.

Bonita Gooseberry

Last year shaped me. It really. I mean, I think the two most powerful things that has shaped my life is when I walked across the stage ten years ago and got my master's degree, and then when I passed the board's test to be a mental health professional counselor, those were a major for me. And then, unfortunately, last year, I ended up getting into some trouble with my heart, and so now I'm on a heart transplant list.

Speaker A

Wow. How did that change your life?

Bonita Gooseberry

Oh, dramatically.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

Because I'm involved with a lot of doctor's appointments and a lot of. Of testing, and they come out every week and do blood draws and just so many things that's associated with being on the transplant list, because when you become a part of the transplant program, they have certain rules and stuff that you have to go by.

Speaker A

Yeah. Yeah. That's tough. I'm sorry to hear that. Well, on that note, let's talk about your health and well being. Okay. How do you manage your health and wellness as you age well.

Bonita Gooseberry

I'm getting better at that. I'm learning now in life to live, live, you know, eat to live instead of living to eat. So I can't switch that around because there was a point in my life where I lived to eat, like, you know what I mean? Where I wanted to eat all the time and wasn't conscious about what the effects could be to my health with me eating certain things. But now, you know, I'm trying to live a longer life, so I'm very conscious about what I. What I put in my mouth now.

Speaker A

Yeah. Yeah. That's interesting. Eating to live or living to eat versus.

Bonita Gooseberry

Yeah, yeah, you gotta versatile. You know, turn it around because it can work against you in the long run.

Speaker A

And it's about listening to your body and giving it what it actually needs, not what your brain is telling it needs. Right.

Bonita Gooseberry

Mm hmm. And that's basically what it is because it becomes an emotional thing with eating, you know? And I've always struggled with that, you know? And so now I'm very conscious. I'm very mindful of all of that. Like, I don't just eat just to be eaten anymore. Like, sometimes you can have certain stresses in your life, and it causes you to just, like, let me go ahead and get some food. Let me get this. Let me get that now. I don't do that anymore.

Speaker A

Are there specific routines or activities that you find beneficial?

Bonita Gooseberry

Yes. Going to the gym is very beneficial for me. My heart has improved since I've been going to the gym. Working out and eating the right foods is so beneficial and spending more money, of course. But it's worth it at the end, because at the end of the day, you know, it's really all about improving your health, especially when you're in the situation that I'm in with being on a heart transplant list, you really have to be conscious of it, stuff like that.

Speaker A

Yeah, yeah. Can you describe any challenges you face in maintaining your health and how you overcome them? So obviously, your heart is a huge challenge.

Bonita Gooseberry

Yep. A very huge one right now.

Speaker A

How are you working to, I guess it's hard to say overcome it, but. Well, how are you navigating that?

Bonita Gooseberry

Well, I just make sure I attend all of my appointments. I make sure I take all my medications that's prescribed. I make sure I'm eating properly. You know, the thing, the part that I can play, I do it, you know, and try to go to the gym and work out at least three days a week, you know. So I'm putting a 100% in to try to turn things around for myself, you know? So that's all I can do at this point, is just follow the health professionals routine that they give me to do and do that.

Speaker A

Right. Right. That makes sense. In terms of diet, exercise, and mental health, what strategies do you find most effective?

Bonita Gooseberry

Exercising is most effective in eating right, like eating fruits and vegetables and not any lemonade, carbs, and all that stuff at your diethyde, you know? And that was a hard thing for me, you know? And that was really hard for me because carbs fill you up. Yeah, that's a poor man food. So we always, you know, we was raised on carbs, you know, the potatoes and the rice and all that stuff. So that's a part of our cultural being. So that was a challenge.

Speaker A

I haven't heard that phrase in a long time. Poor man's food.

Bonita Gooseberry

Yeah, it is.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

I mean, I haven't heard that a lot considered as a poor man's food. Like, that's what we down south. I mean. Cause I'm from down south.

Speaker A

Well, my mom, she's from Milwaukee, but she's said that before.

Bonita Gooseberry

Yeah, it is. I mean, when you low on food, that's what you gonna. That's your go to option, is carbs. Because carbs gonna fill you up.

Speaker A

That's interesting. You kinda made my day with that one. It's just a memory, you know what I'm saying? Making me think of my mom. Let's talk about staying informed and engaged. With the amount of information that's available, how do you stay informed about the world around you? And are there particular sources or methods you trust?

Bonita Gooseberry

Yeah, I mean, for one thing, I try to stay in touch with the heavenly father because I think that he give us a broader knowledge about things. And I also watch the news. I also read newspapers, you know, so I read newspapers, most definitely. So almost definitely. I faithfully go get the Milwaukee Times, and I go get the journal faithfully every week. So I'm on top of whatever's going on in the world and around.

Speaker A

Mm hmm.

Bonita Gooseberry

Yeah. That's how you stay informed, you know, how do you. Sometimes watching the news can be depressing, though.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

Cause it's like, okay, there are some good things going on in the world. Why we gonna talk about that? Like, you know, so, yeah, I hear you.

Speaker A

How do you determine, you know, whether or not you trust that source? Like, what do you, what do you do?

Bonita Gooseberry

I mean, I never thought about that. About whether I trust a source or not. I never thought about whether it was a trustworthy source. It's just knowledge that, you know, and you just kind of be okay with it. Like, okay, this is what's going on. Yeah, this is interesting or whatever. So I don't. I've never even processed that to say whether or not it's factual, whether or not it's something that I should trust.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

Never even thought about. That really is world.

Speaker A

It's just a lot of misinformation.

Bonita Gooseberry

It is. It is. And, I mean, I guess even with information, I'm very conscious about what I obtain in my memory bank. So a lot of it is like, okay, well, okay, whatever. You know what I mean? Like, if it don't personally pertain to me or somebody I know, I can process the information and give it to somebody to help them. I really don't retain it and hold on to it anyway. So I feel you.

Speaker A

I feel you. How important is it for you to keep up with current events?

Bonita Gooseberry

Oh, very important. Yeah, that's important. You know, why do you feel? Well, I think it's important to keep up with current events because it's always good to know what's going on around you. You know, the Bible even speaks to that, that we have to know those who we label among. So you have to know the community you live in. You have to know the people that you surround yourself with daily. You have to know all of that. And if you don't know that, then, you know, we perish because of a lack of knowledge.

Bonita Gooseberry

So we have to know what's going on around us. We have to know the people that we involve in ourselves, in our daily routine. We have to know all of those things, and we deal accordingly to it. Life is like chess to me. You know, it's like you move the chest, like, from this place to that place, but you got to know when to move. You got to know when to move.

Speaker A

You got to anticipate other people.

Bonita Gooseberry

You got to move. That's right. And you got to anticipate other people's moves. So that's kind of how I process life like that.

Speaker A

Yeah. How do you feel about using technology to access news and information? Do you find it easy or challenging?

Bonita Gooseberry

It's very easy for me. Very easy for me because I'm very savvy with computers and stuff, so that's very easy for me.

Speaker A

Let's talk about interest in evidence based programs. So, have you ever participated in a structured program or class focused on health and wellness?

Bonita Gooseberry

No, I have not. This is my first time.

Speaker A

Okay. Okay. So evidence based programs can offer structured ways to improve health and wellness over an eight week period.

Bonita Gooseberry

Okay.

Speaker A

Okay. What are your initial thoughts on joining such a program with that commitment, that eight week commitment? And then would that make. What would make you interested or disinterested in participating?

Bonita Gooseberry

Nothing. I mean, I'm not doing anything. I'm not working right now, so wouldn't be nothing that will stop me from doing it, honestly.

Speaker A

Okay. And the time commitment, that doesn't deter you?

Bonita Gooseberry

No.

Speaker A

Okay. Understanding these programs require a weekly commitment. What potential barriers could make participation difficult for you?

Bonita Gooseberry

Nothing. I just have doctor's appointments. But I can always work around those appointments.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

No, like, long as I know ahead of time what the dates are and the times that I have to be committed, then I can work around that.

Speaker A

Yeah. Last question here. What incentives or support will make you more likely to join and stay committed to the program?

Bonita Gooseberry

I mean, obviously, better help.

Speaker A

Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

That's gonna be the greatest reward that you can get. That's more valuable than tangible things, you know, is learning strategies, how to live healthier, to live a healthier lifestyle. So, I mean, I think that's the biggest reward that you can gain from it.

Speaker A

Yeah. Yeah.

Bonita Gooseberry

I mean, for me, because of the circumstances, you know, so.

Speaker A

Yeah, I hear you. Okay. Well, Miss Bonita, I appreciate you coming out.

Bonita Gooseberry

Well, thank you. I appreciate and enjoy coming.

Speaker A

Yeah. All right. I.

Summary of 5 points

Given the insights from the interview with Bonita Gooseberry, here are five recommendations to enhance recruitment efforts for African American participants and facilitators in evidence-based programs:

1. Emphasize Health Benefits and Personal Stories

Bonita mentioned that better health is a significant incentive. Recruitment materials should highlight personal testimonies from individuals (preferably from the African American community) who have seen improvements in their health due to participation. Videos or written stories showcasing these benefits can be compelling.

2. Culturally Relevant Activities and Support

Incorporate elements that resonate with the African American community, such as soul food alternatives and culturally relevant fitness routines. Acknowledge and address historical and cultural perspectives on food and health, as Bonita discussed about "poor man's food." Providing alternatives and education about healthier options can align well with their lived experiences.

3. Flexible Scheduling and Clear Communication

Bonita emphasized the importance of knowing appointment times in advance. Offer flexible scheduling options and use clear, consistent communication about program times and commitments. Providing options to work around participants' busy schedules and other appointments can remove potential barriers.

4. Community and Church Involvement

Bonita is actively involved in church activities and her community. Collaborate with local churches, community centers, and African American organizations to promote the program. Host information sessions or health fairs at these locations to build trust and showcase the program’s benefits directly within the community.

5. Leverage Trusted News Sources

Since Bonita trusts local newspapers like the Milwaukee Times and the Journal, leverage these platforms for targeted recruitment. Publish articles, advertisements, and success stories in these trusted sources. This can increase visibility and credibility among potential African American participants and facilitators.
