Kim Ades 00:02:01 - 00:02:04
Thank you for having me. I'm excited to talk to you today.
Phil Better 00:02:05 - 00:02:33
We had a great little chat beforehand, got really connected. We're on a new level. We're besties now as or, like, the calls. But I'm very excited to talk to you, learn everything I can about you. But first off, always my favorite question to ask, why did you become an entrepreneur? What made you decide to shackle off the nine to five, you know, a grind that we mere mortals have and, decide to jump into the entrepreneurial world?
Kim Ades 00:02:33 - 00:03:03
You know, I can answer that question in a million ways. I can tell you it's in my blood. It's in my DNA. It's in my, you know, in my genes. My parents were entrepreneurs or my dad was an entrepreneur. Many family members were entrepreneurs. I could tell you that, You know, when I was young, I used to like have an entrepreneurial spirit and we used to go to Cape Cod and I used to sell massages on the beach to my friends. So it was always in me, but the truth is I'm unemployable and that's what it boils down to.
Kim Ades 00:03:03 - 00:03:06
I can't work for anyone else. It's just not how I'm wired.
Phil Better 00:03:08 - 00:03:13
Have you tried working for other people, or has it always been, like, kicked no. Kicking and screaming?
Kim Ades 00:03:14 - 00:03:52
Not kicking and screaming, but if I go way back, like, way, way back. So I graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology and then couldn't find a job in my field. So I ended up working, like, in a store that sold balloons. And, they one day they said, hey. Can you go to the basement and make phone calls and see if you can schedule appointments with, people who are getting married so that they would be open to, getting their halls decorated with balloon decorations. I'm like, okay. And I started to do this and I'm like, man, I'm good at this. I'm good at this.
Kim Ades 00:03:53 - 00:03:56
Why am I doing it for them? I should do this for myself.
Phil Better 00:03:56 - 00:03:56
So So
Kim Ades 00:03:56 - 00:04:17
I started my own balloon company. It's a little decorating company. And keep in mind, I didn't decorate a single balloon ever in my life. And I remember I went to my first appointment, and I'm like, yeah, we can decorate the hall for you. She's like, but what would it look like? And so I don't know. I didn't have a picture. I didn't have anything with me. I took a piece of paper and I started like making circles.
Kim Ades 00:04:17 - 00:04:44
Like, here, we're gonna make a balloon. It's gonna look like an arch. Here's what it's gonna look like. Okay. And she bought it. And so then I started getting pictures and then I built an album and then it became easy and keep in mind, like I was, how old was I? I was 21, 20 one. And I looked super young. And at the time, I didn't need glasses, but I bought glasses so that I could look a little bit more sophisticated when I went to talk to these people and sell them balloon decorating.
Kim Ades 00:04:46 - 00:04:47
That's how
Phil Better 00:04:47 - 00:04:56
it's going forward. Okay. How long I have to ask because I'm always interested in the first success or the first venture. How long did the the balloon business last?
