Blaine Bolus

So Mina, I'm going to let you kick it off. I know last week we've talked a lot about Amazon every time you guys come on, and those conversations are really good for anyone who's listening in and you want to go all the way down the rabbit hole on Amazon and how to scale products there. Check out our episodes with Mina. But today we're going to be talking about TikTok shop. And Mina has been scaling TikTok shop for a bunch of his clients. He's got a bunch of different strategies that he wants to share. And one reason we're really excited to talk about it is, you know, it's definitely tick tock shop is new. It's something that's on the forefront of like all these brands minds, but there's.

Blaine Bolus

It's changing every day. Right? Um, from the time they rolled it out to where we're ceiling now and brands are starting to, you know, scale up. Tick tock shop is part of their strategy. So today that's what we're going to be chatting about. So Mina, I'm going to let you kick it off. Why don't you just give a quick background again for maybe some of the listeners who weren't familiar with your other episodes you've done with us. Give us your background and then let's just get into it and what you're thinking about. TikTok shop.

Mina Elias

Yeah, so my name is Mina lies. I'm the founder of Trivium Group, which is essentially an Amazon marketing agency. We partner with brands, grow and scale them on Amazon and now also on TikTok shop. I started out as a brand owner. I still own the brand. It's called mma nutrition. Grew it, scaled it. It was doing seven figures.

Mina Elias

That makes me like 35 month in profits right now. And I start sharing my results with people and my knowledge just give everything away for free. Uh, didn't have anything to sell. There was an insane amount of, uh, demand for me to run other people's brands. I turned them down for a very long time until finally I caved when this, like massive aggregator wanted to pay me money to run one of their brands. And, um, you know, 2021. I started trivium. Uh, we started as a, as a PPC agency only.

Mina Elias

And then, you know, transformed slowly into a full service. So ads, reviews, DSP, whatever. Um, started out with one employee. We're now at about 87 or 88 employees. Total 189, 190 brands under management. And so, you know, I live and breathe Amazon and, you know, Amazon is like an incredible marketplace, right. When TikTok shop came out, the reason that I was very interested in it is because I was always like, you know, afraid of Facebook and Instagram ads. You definitely like, you know, you have amazing agencies out there that do that, but it requires like an insane amount of creatives and, you know, constantly creating different things and I a copy and headline and testing different landing pages, all that kind of stuff.

Mina Elias

I've always been a marketplace guy, so I work within the criteria Amazon gives me and I constantly optimize and I'm able to deliver results. So those two worlds, like never really meshed until TikTok shop came around. And I was like, am I, am I gonna get into TikTok shop? Like, it seems like it needs a lot of like, content and all this kind of stuff, but the way that they tick tock shop, set things up is they set it up so well that even someone like me, who's, who's fully like marketplace, it's like such an easy win. They created, they made a win win for everyone, right? So they essentially created a platform, you know, TikTok, which is, like, the. Right now, I think, the biggest social media platform. Everyone is addicted to TikTok. And the crazier thing, and the thing that everyone needs to worry about is that younger generations are way more attracted to TikTok than anything else, right? And so tick tock and Snapchat. But I would say mainly tick tock.

Mina Elias

Like most, I would say people in the Gen Z and Gen a start their searches on TikTok. So if they're looking for a restaurant, they're not googling it, they're not going on Yelp, they're going on TikTok. If they're looking for recommendations when they're traveling, they're not going on Google reading blogs, they're not going on YouTube, they're going on TikTok. And so that started to concerned me because I'm like, I feel like, you know, we're unstoppable in Amazon, right? Nothing can take Amazon down, right? We, you know, I think. I think Facebook and Instagram could go down. It's not a big deal, but I don't think anything is even close to Amazon. There's no reason for it to go down. But there's one threat now, which is if the entire world's, you know, shopping behavior changes.

Mina Elias

So there is no marketplace that's going to come in and beat Amazon. Like Walmart, I don't think, is going to come in and beat Amazon. But I. What if everyone all of a sudden doesn't want to shop the same way like, they, you know, we used to love shopping in store. Our parents loved going to the store. We're like, fuck the store. We want Amazon. We want everything online.

Mina Elias

I don't want to touch or see anything. Just get it to my house. If I don't like it, I'll send it back. And so we changed, and the platform that was set up for success was Amazon. Now, what if, again, we change? And the platform that set up for success is tick tock shop? And so that's what kind of really got me in and said, okay, I need to learn this now. Again, I was very afraid of, like, creating a lot of content. But then the way tick tock shop set it up was they said, okay, we have all of these people and customers that are living on TikTok shop, living on TikTok, that are ready to buy. Like, you know, they'll see ads and they'll buy.

Mina Elias

Same as Facebook. Right? They added a second component and they said, well, what if we, you know, solve the content problem? So what if we just started selling all of these people that are stay at home or like college kids or whatever, like, hey, you can make an extra few thousand dollars a month by being an affiliate. All you have to do is create content that you're already doing it now except link it to a product and tag it and then you make a commission. And so then once they had those two pieces, they're like, hey, brands, like we have, you know, billions of users, we have, you know, millions of affiliates ready to promote your products. Everything is easy and centralized in our platform. Like, you know, come and sell your products on our marketplace. And it was a, I was like, oh, hell yeah, I'm definitely going to do this because now I have a bigger audience, right? The whole younger generation is on there. So this is something that you're probably not going to be able to hit with Facebook and Instagram or, you know, meta in general.

Mina Elias

And then you're like, okay, we have affiliates. So now I don't have to go hunting for affiliates. I don't have to go using, you know, like incense pro or whatever and go find affiliates. It's, they're already all there and they create like an easy way for me to filter and reach out to them and like ask them, hey, do you want to be a collaborator? So they kind of made this, this beautiful win win win. And, you know, like we can go deeper into the strategies, obviously, which we will, but, um, for someone like me, it's like, okay, if I can go on and if I can on TikTok shop and if I can set it up pretty easily. And so if you guys don't know this, it's so simple, uh, to, you know, add a product. All you need to do is like click add a product, add some images, add a title, some bullet points, you're done. Essentially, you know, it's a very, very simple, very easy, it's not as complex as Amazon.

Mina Elias

You know, you'll probably need a few pieces of content on your page which you should already have some content. And if you don't, what you could do is you can even have the, you can reach out to affiliates and say, hey, you know, reach out to the smaller ones and say, hey, I'll give you the product for free. But on top of that I'll pay you, you know, $25 if you can create a 62nd video for me, get ten or 20 of those and then put them on your page. Say, say like, you know, this is going to be for me. Like, you can't post it. Um, and then get them on your page. So now you have a page that looks decent because it has like a bunch of UGC content from creators. And by the way, like, I'm finding really, really good creators that create amazing content for incredibly cheap.

Mina Elias

Like, we're talking $15 to $30. And remember, like, when you're creating content, you don't need a us person. Like, you can actually like a lot of content. It doesn't require a lot of talking. So you could get people overseas that they're like, $15 is a lot. Or even in the US, I'm seeing like $25 because it's 1 minute of work. Call it like 15 minutes when they edit the video. So, you know, like, if they're getting paid $25 for 15 minutes, they're getting paid $100 an hour, which to a lot of these content creators seems like a lot of money.

Blaine Bolus

Yeah. I think what's so unique about TikTok Shop is a platform is like it just merged the affiliate and attribution side of the equation. Whereas before, everyone's strategy was like, oh, let me work with creators and influencers, work with them on Instagram. But the attribution wasn't there. And by TikTok shop, building that in the fabric of the platform, and, like, you're saying that's the type of content people even want on tick tock. Like, when you're looking for a restaurant, when you're looking for new content, like, in a specific area about a specific topic, a lot of people are defaulting to TikTok because it's telling them exactly what they want rather than, you know, going to Google and searching through a bunch of results that aren't giving you the exact answer. It's rich, it's visual. You can really get a feel for it.

Blaine Bolus

So, um, I think it's only a natural progression. Now, I'd love to chat through. I think some of the things that you mentioned are, like, really key for new brands that are getting set up. Right. Like, you're able to launch a page, either create the content yourself, if you're not doing it, outsource to a couple creators. But, like, what does a brand need to know about getting set up in TikTok shop? What's the approval process? Um, you know, what do they need from an inventory standpoint? What? Like, what does a brand need to have before they can start selling on TikTok shop?

Mina Elias

Yeah. So it, it took me five minutes to honestly set up my TikTok account. Uh, you're, you're going to need a, you know, a us person, right? And so it used to be that you have to be a us person. And so, you know, you're going to need, like, your company information, your address, your ein, your Social Security. Now, even if you're not based in the US, you could have a us local. So that's what we do for our clients. I'm like a us representative for them. And so they put in my information, my driver's license, and my Social Security, and then from there, I become, like, their legal rep on TikTok.

Mina Elias

So that's all you need. Setting up your TikTok account is pretty simple. You also need to set up a TikTok page. So TikTok shop is, like, one thing, then you need to set up your TikTok page. That is pretty easy, you know, again, like, it's like setting any social media platform up, you're gonna need, if you're selling any sort of health supplement, you're gonna need, like, really good images of the product, your supplement facts. They haven't asked for a certificate of analysis, but I would expect that soon they're gonna ask for certificate of analysis and cGMP, um, for other products. We haven't seen any issues at all. Like, it's just, you know, you go and list right away.

Mina Elias

Now, the biggest issue, I would say right now with TikTok shop is logistics and, like, fulfillment. So what I did, I don't want to touch fulfillment. So I would, I want to send all my inventory to Amazon, and then I want Amazon to fulfill it. So what I did was I got an app called Webbe. Webbe. And then I connected my TikTok shop account to Webbe, my Amazon account, my seller central account to Webbe, and then map the skus to each other. So when an order comes in on TikTok shop, it sends it to Amazon. Amazon fulfills it.

Mina Elias

It's all great, and everything is good, except that Amazon, sometimes multi channel fulfillment takes a little bit of time. And so I fall outside. I've gotten two violations so far, and I'm starting to get worried because maybe with enough violations, they just kick me off the platform. But I got two violations right now saying, you're not shipping product fast enough. And so that is like, the, the complexity where it's like, and during Prime Day, it was very bad. So that, that is just one complexity. If you are d, two c and you're already selling, you know, through your own warehouse, this is not a problem. You just connect, you know, use ship station or something to connect to your three pl and you're good to go.

Blaine Bolus

Right.

Mina Elias

And so this is just, you know, for the people who are Amazon only this, you know, there is a solution, but it comes with a little bit of a risk. Um, so go. Go ahead, Blaine.

Blaine Bolus

Yeah, no, I was going to say, I think that's also a really important point because what I've seen is, like, basically, TikTok shop allows you to scale up how much you're selling. So they give you a little bit. They're like, okay, you can sell this many units you can sell, and then once you actually fulfill on that, and once you don't have violations, and one of those violations, like good product, good customer experience, and not. And being able to fulfill on time, they'll kind of up your limit and push you out more and more. So it seems like they're taking that really seriously. And to your point, I think that's awesome. If you have all your inventory set up in Amazon, great. There are bridges to get you to start, you know, expanding over to TikTok shop.

Blaine Bolus

But if you've got your. If you're running your fulfillment yourself or you've got a three pl, it's really configurable and it just, you know, drops right into your shopify system and goes out the door just like any other order.

Mina Elias

Yeah. Ten times better. Ten times better if you have that. So, you know, the first step is, you know, setting up your tick tock shop. Adding the products. Like I said, adding the products is pretty simple. You need images. You know, I would look at Amazon and see how, you know, images on Amazon look.

Mina Elias

Not on Shopify, because I know Shopify. You have, like, the front of the product, the side of the product that doesn't sell. You need, like, you know, infographics that sell the product. So I would look at Amazon, see how their infographics is done. So you're going to need images, you're going to need a title, you're going to need some bullet points, you know, explaining the product, and you're going to need a category. That's it. And then from there, you add the products connected to the, you know, logistics sort of software that you're going to use, map it out, and then from there, you're ready to go. So next step is, okay, now we need to reach out to affiliates.

Mina Elias

There's two ways that I go about this. The first way is. So I used to do manual outreach. So first of all, they give you filters so you can go in when you're trying to do targeted collaborations or open collaborations. What open collaborations is because you say anyone can apply to be an affiliate and get, like, 10% commission, you know what I mean? And that's just open to everyone. Targeted is where you go after people. So obviously, for open, set it up, let people come to you. No one might come to you.

Mina Elias

Doesn't really matter. You just want to have it set up with targeted. Then you go in and you start setting up criteria and saying, okay, I want people in the health category. I want women. I want, you know, that they have to have at least sold a $1,000 worth of product. They need to have, you know, at least a thousand followers and so on and so forth. If you ask me about criteria, I care more about, you know, GMV. If they generated sales, they probably can do, you know, generate sales for me, if it follower count doesn't really matter that much.

Mina Elias

So I just kind of go for they're in the category and they have a decent GMP. There is now a better way to do this, which is a software called Maven Reach. It is a bot where you configure it, and until you have about, I think, $500 a week in sales, which, by the way, you can do it yourself. So you can just go and buy one order, buy $500 worth of your product, and you can hack this. But until you have $500 of sales, you can't do more than 50 outreaches a week. But once you do that, you have 500. I think you can go up to 500 outreaches a week or a day, something like that. So it really scales up very fast once you have a little bit of revenue.

Mina Elias

So we set up the bot, and the bot automatically reaches out to people, and I know that they're updating it. So now everyone that doesn't respond, it keeps doing outreach and kind of trying to reengage them. So the goal is, when you reach out to these affiliates, you're technically not hiring them or sending them samples. You're just trying to get into their inbox. Once they, you know, see, say, hey, like, okay, cool. I'm like, I'm down. To be your affiliate, they have to request a sample. Uh, so they request a sample.

Mina Elias

So it's like a free product that, again, tick tock shop coordinates, all of that. You want to go through this process because, uh, tick tock will look at an affiliate, and in every free sample they get, they are required to do a video. If they don't do a video TikTok shop will penalize them. But also, you can see their score. So you can see, you know, Blaine, he got ten samples, only did nine videos, has a 90% completion rate. And so they know, like, as an affiliate, if I want to make money, I need to have 100% completion rate. Anything above, I would say, like 90, 90 plus. Okay, it's fine.

Mina Elias

Maybe they had that one or two that they didn't really want to do. Something was off about the product, but anything under that would be a red flag. Like, maybe they're not going to follow through on what they're supposed to do. And so, anyways, um, you know, you reach out to all these affiliates, the goal is they're going to request samples, and then you are going to go through all these sample requests and only approve the affiliates that you feel comfortable. And so you could maybe approve, you know, 20 this week, and then, you know, start with that and then maybe do another 20 next week. The goal for me is I like to be anywhere between 50 to 100 samples a month and getting 50 to 100 pieces of content every single month. And so that's kind of like step one. Let's get content out there.

Mina Elias

They will post content, and that's going to be great, and it's going to make a little bit of sales, but that's not actually how you're going to make your sales. Right. The next step is you're going to start taking that content and testing it in ads. And so I like the way that they set up their ad platform. There's certain things that you need to kind of pay attention to. You don't want to set up the budget on the campaign level. You want to set it on the ad group level. I like to keep it individual.

Mina Elias

Like, one video per ad group. So one video in each ad group. You could do multiple ad groups. So I can say, like, hey, I'm testing this kind of thing in this campaign. Five ad groups each $110 a day or $20 a day, each one with one video. And I like to keep my sort of demographics pretty open. And then later on, there is audience insights, where you can see an individual video, how it performed, like, which demographics converted the best. And so you can then create a new campaign with all of the videos that performed well, except you refined them.

Mina Elias

So you're taking those videos, running them again, except refining and only targeting the audiences that convert it. And then they also allow you to create retargeting audiences. So you can go for people who viewed your product, you can go for people who, you know, clicked on the product but didn't convert. And you can create a retargeting campaign to basically, you know, retarget all of those people. And so they make it, you know, pretty, pretty easy, pretty straightforward for you to just take content from creators and use it as a, as an ad.

Blaine Bolus

Mina, couple questions. So I'd like to go through a couple different scenarios with you. If you are up, I want to talk about if you're a brand new brand starting up versus if you're a brand that's already doing, like, some serious volume on another platform, what kind of ad budgets would you start with? Like, does it kind of look the same? I know you said you typically like to, you know, seed about 50 to 100 products per month, but what, yeah, from a budgeting perspective, just to test and see what works, what do you see working best for. For brands of different sizes?

Mina Elias

Yeah, I would say what I've seen is $1,000 a month starting on TikTok is good. You expect, like, you know, if you're doing well at two to three extra oz, and I'm going to cover that in a second, I would. I would be able to do that with maybe 30 videos a month. Right. And so, you know, call it 40 because, you know, you might get ten people that drop off or something. So anywhere between 30 to 40 affiliates will generate 30 videos, which then you can use. You know, as with any platform, there is ad fatigue. So you, number one, you'll see that from your frequency.

Mina Elias

So you want to be under, I would say, a three x three frequency or less. Um, anything more than that. I think I see the ad fatigue significantly. You want to be a 1% click through rate or more. So you might have 40 videos or 30 videos, but 15 of them have, like, a less than 1% click through rate. And I already know that anything under a 1% click through rate is just not going to perform. And so that. That would be my budget if I'm starting out, if I am, um, if, if, like, if I'm bigger, like, and let's say, doing seven figures or more or eight figures on another platform, I would start off probably with more like a $5,000 budget.

Mina Elias

I would. The. This is the strategy that I would implement even sooner. So there is a tool called Fastmos, f a s t moss. This tool is like, you know, an insights tool on TikTok shop. So you can see what products are selling, how much they're selling, what affiliates are making money, how much they're making in commissions, all that kind of stuff. So what I like to do is I like to go and start looking for my competitors products or even products that are complementary or in related categories, who are the ones that are doing the best. And then I start seeing what content is actually driving their most amount of their revenue.

Mina Elias

And so I can actually tell, I can say, okay, wow, this video drove like whatever, 1000 units in sales. And that's where I get my content inspiration. Then I go and I find if it's complementary product, I can just reach out to that exact same affiliate and say, hey, I'll pay you to replicate this, give you a deep discount, like a deep commission, and then I'll put ads behind it. And then you get really high quality content from someone that's proven themselves. They've actually made a lot of money with this, with the video for another product. Or I just go and find the top affiliates in my category. So with Fastmos I can see okay, in the health category or in this category, whatever, who are the top producing affiliates. And then, you know, let's take the top 50, start with number 50 and then offer them a little bit of money to create content.

Mina Elias

You're going to get a much higher quality piece of content because, you know, not gonna lie, I am generating a little bit of sales here and there from a bunch of affiliates, but the quality is pretty low if you ask me, versus like, you know, getting it done by like serious creators, you're gonna get a much better piece of content. So if I'm bigger, I would lean more heavily towards that. Like, instead of getting all this free pieces of content, I'm gonna get, I'm gonna spend, let's say $150 to $200 per affiliate on the top 50 affiliates. That's gonna cost you ten grand, but it's gonna, you know, and then you're gonna run ads behind it, but it's gonna generate way better content for you and it's going to represent your brand way better. And so for smaller brands, like, we don't care, like, just get us out there. We need to make sales for bigger brands. You're going to want to like have a little bit of, you know, kind of that brand guiding.

Blaine Bolus

We are really excited to announce that DTC Pod is officially part of the HubSpot podcast network. The HubSpot podcast Network is the audio destination for business professionals and we're really excited about being part of the network because we're going to be able to keep growing the show, bringing you guys amazing guests and obviously helping you guys learn from the best founders, marketers, and builders of the most successful consumer brands. So anyway, keep listening to DTC pod and more shows like us on the HubSpot podcast network@HubSpot.com. podcastnetwork yeah, I think there's a couple things that you mentioned that are really important to think about. I think when it comes to finding creators, it's like being able to determine how much they're selling versus just their views. Like, that's super important. Kind of like you were talking about, right? It's not just about, oh, this creator can pull a bunch of views. It's like, what is converting? And I've seen videos go super, super viral with, like, basically zero conversion and then other videos that, like, don't look like they perform, but they convert like crazy.

Blaine Bolus

So I think being able to track that is, is really important. And then I think what you said about brand and the creators that you're working with is also important. You need to make sure that you're finding not only creators in your niche, but, like, creators that can, to a certain extent, you know, represent your brand. If that's something that you're interested in. The next thing I want to talk about. Oh, do you have something?

Mina Elias

Yeah, I was gonna say also just I wouldn't go too anal about it. Right. Because I know, like, for example, there's a couple big brands that I'm working with right now, and I literally have gone through, like, six calls with them just so we can get one Instagram post up for, like, the work that we're doing together. And I'm like, at a certain point, you guys are, you know, with, maybe with Instagram because this is your brand, Instagram or whatever. I get it. But with TikTok shop, again, this is user generated content. If everything seems so manufactured, people are going to feel that and they're going to be like, this is, this company is just paying everyone off and I don't trust it. As opposed to having, like, a healthy mix of, like, okay, there's a bunch of, like, shitty creators creating content for them, and it's like, wow, it's like, it seems like they're not even getting paid for this.

Mina Elias

Like, people actually are creating content about this brand.

Blaine Bolus

Cool. The next thing I want to talk about, Mina, is the, um, you know, let's just talk about how TikTok and Amazon sort of relate to each other, right? Because, like, in any sort of paid marketing, you're going to see halo effects and you're going to see, um, you know, upticks in conversion across the platform, when you deploy, spend. But, uh, I'd love to just see from your experience, you're one of the, in the, one of the unique spots where you're running an agency, you're working with a whole bunch of brands that are working on both of these channels. How do the two platforms sort of play together?

Mina Elias

Yeah, so what I'm seeing more and more is if you can break even or lose a little bit of money on TikTok shop, you will see a halo effect into Amazon that results in, like, a lot more profitability there. And so, you know, I'll take my brand as an example, MMA nutrition. So I launched one product only on TikTok shop. It was my fruit blast packets. You know, I started spending, I want to say, four grand a month, and it was generating about, I want to say, eight to $9,000 in revenue. Like, not, not even, like maybe something low like that. Right? That product, it's a newer product on Amazon was losing money for the past few months because it was in the launch phase. So I was just spending money on ads and getting it up and running over.

Mina Elias

Like the, over the course of like 30 days launching tick tock shop, it went from doing negative, like 20 or $30 a week in profit to over $450 a week in profit. And so, you know, the, the signs are, and this, you know, has then also repeated into other products and other clients that we're running, other brands. But what I'm seeing is Amazon. We know that Amazon loves external traffic. It rewards people for bringing external traffic, because all that means is that you're bringing people to their, to their platform, and they're going to spend money on their platform, they love you for it, and so they start ranking you better and they start rewarding you for it. The other thing is, what I'm noticing is when people are typing in your brand name on Amazon, like, they come in and they type in MMA nutrition. Even though they're converting on my brand name, I'm seeing my other keywords, for no other reason, improve their organic ranking. And so again, I think that's just one of the halo effects of you bringing external traffic to Amazon.

Mina Elias

And so if you're getting on TikTok shop, if you don't have any Amazon presence, I strongly recommend that you get on Amazon first, set your stuff up there, because part of the typical consumer behavior on TikTok shop is they understand what TikTok shop is, but they would rather just go to Amazon, even though TikTok makes it easy but they know that with Amazon, you're going to buy the stuff. It's going to show up today, tomorrow, the day after, and if there's anything wrong with it, they can return it right away. So what we're seeing is an increase. Like, even we're looking at branded search, branded, like, searches on the, on our, like, own brand name. As soon as we started running TikTok shop for a lot of brands, including mine, I'm starting to see an increase in branded search. And there's, like, really no kind of guidelines. Like, it's not a 20% or a 30% increase, it's just we're seeing it, like, some brands got a 15% increase, others got a 50% increase. It's hard to write, like, right now, like, tick tock is very unpredictable, but I would say for every single brand, again, like, tick tock shop kind of sucks because it's going to be a hit or miss.

Mina Elias

Like, you can, you know, you can't sell certain things. Like, you know, one of my friends sells, like, rv stuff. Like, so some of, some of his rv stuff is just going to be too boring to create content around. Even if you're like an rv enthusiast versus, like, on Amazon, someone's looking for this, like, rv host, cleaner, whatever, they're like, they're looking for it, they're going to find it, they're going to buy it. So some brands might not find success in TikTok shop because the storytelling aspect of their product isn't there, but other brands will and in all cases, get up and running, start running ads and all this stuff. And if you can break even or lose a little bit of money on TikTok Shop, you'll notice the halo effect into Amazon and you'll notice your profitability go way up on Amazon. And so, and now it's gonna get even crazier because did you see the announcement of TikTok Shop and Amazon? So they just announced that now TikTok Shop is partnering with Amazon and TikTok is going to, you know, show products up on Tick Tock shop and then people can buy it from Amazon. And so this is weird because I don't know how this is going to work because right now you go and you click and it takes you to the TikTok shop listing and then you click buy and it'll ask you for Google pay, whatever.

Mina Elias

So I don't know if it's going to become, hey, you know, it's no longer tick tock shop listings. It's all Amazon listings or tick tock shop listings. Uh, you can choose. I don't know how it's going to work, but it's very interesting that two giants decided to merge.

Blaine Bolus

Yeah. And I think it's just interesting kind of what you were talking about even before with buying behavior. Right. It wasn't, you know, obviously prime when they launched. In the beginning, maybe not everyone used it, but like now it's in the last, you know, 1015 years, it's become like the standard of how everyone shops online. It's like, oh, I just buy stuff on Amazon, things like, I just buy them. And TikTok shop and any new massive marketplace, they've got the eyeballs. But in terms of like, who's buying, sure there's going to be people who, like, bought with it, had a great time and like are going to buy more and more and more.

Blaine Bolus

But like over time that that kind of share of how many people are, like, buying routinely through tick Tock shop is probably going to increase and for now, you're able to capture some of that traffic for maybe someone who hasn't like, put in their credit card with TikTok or just is seeing the content, loves the content, and maybe isn't buying it directly through TikTok. They're going to be able to buy through Amazon and then through, um, you know, deeper integrations, we'll see what, what that ends up looking like and I'm sure we'll have another convo with you, uh, later down the line once, once that integration is launched and a little bit more robust. But, um, yeah, I guess, I guess that's, that's pretty good in terms of what we've covered, in terms of getting set up on tick tock shop, how it works, recruiting solid affiliates and then, you know, matching that with your Amazon strategy, is there anything else that you've sort of been seeing or that you're excited to test with with tick tock shop and how you're scaling it for brands over the next couple months?

Mina Elias

So one of my friends, his name is Robert Oliver, he used to own the genius brand and sold it, owns top shelf grind. Now he's really doing a lot of cool stuff on TikTok shop. One thing that he's doing that I'm not is he is, he has like kind of like his own internal affiliates. So basically he has these internal people. They create dedicated accounts and, you know, they're just pumping out content nonstop. They have like a content framework and, you know, they're just, they're basically like creators on retainer and so that's one thing that I really want to start exploring in the future is, you know, as we're working with all these affiliates, you know, I get to touch a lot of different brands, a lot of different affiliates, and I, I am thinking of starting some sort of, you know, like the hub for the top performing creators, and then from there saying, hey, like, can I get you guys on an agreement on a retainer? And I want you to create like 30 pieces of content for me. Here's guidelines to what works best. Again, I can pull a lot of it out of fastmos.

Mina Elias

I can just see what's worked best for other people and then have them do it. And then see, you know, if having someone dedicated creating all of that content and some of it going viral and then me taking that, putting even more money behind it, if I can get more success for a brand that way, or if it's just, you know, might not like, be scalable.

Blaine Bolus

Sweet. Mina, want to thank you for coming on. Why don't you shout out where we can find you. For anyone who's listening wants to learn a little bit more about you, your agency and TikTok shop.

A few key takeaways:

TikTok Shop offers massive potential, but start on Amazon first. Consumer trust in Amazon's reliability and returns still reigns supreme.

Success on TikTok Shop demands storytelling. Not all products are a fit. Understanding your brand's narrative is crucial.

Leverage micro-affiliates. Identify creators already selling in your niche. $25 for a 1-min video can go a long way.

Use tools like Fastmos to analyze competitor products, top content, and rising affiliate stars. Quality over quantity for larger brands.

The TikTok Shop halo effect is real. Mina saw Amazon sales and rankings soar from the external TikTok traffic boost.

Authenticity is key. Avoid overproducing content for TikTok's raw, creative vibe. Let creators represent your brand organically.

Title: Unlocking the Potential of TikTok Shop for Your Brand
Subheader: Insights from Mina Elias on Leveraging TikTok Shop for Growth and Profitability

Introduction
In a recent episode of the DTC POD, Mina Elias, founder of Trivium Group, shared valuable insights on the potential of TikTok Shop for brands looking to expand their reach and boost sales. With the rise of social commerce and the growing influence of platforms like TikTok, it's crucial for businesses to understand how to effectively leverage these channels to drive growth and profitability.

Setting Up on Amazon Before TikTok Shop
Mina Elias recommends that brands establish their presence on Amazon before diving into TikTok Shop. Amazon's reputation for reliability and seamless returns has cultivated consumer trust, making it a solid foundation for building brand credibility. By setting up on Amazon first, brands can gain valuable experience in e-commerce and build a loyal customer base before venturing into the more dynamic world of TikTok Shop.

Navigating the Storytelling Aspect of TikTok Shop
Success on TikTok Shop varies from brand to brand, largely due to the platform's emphasis on storytelling. Products that lend themselves well to engaging narratives and visually compelling content tend to perform better on TikTok Shop. Brands must adapt their marketing strategies to create content that resonates with the TikTok audience, showcasing their products in a way that captures attention and sparks interest.

Leveraging Internal Affiliates for Content Creation
One effective strategy for brands on TikTok Shop is to utilize internal affiliates for content creation. By dedicating creators to produce engaging videos showcasing products, brands can tap into the power of influencer marketing within the TikTok ecosystem. Mina suggests paying affiliates around $25 for a 1-minute video, making it an affordable and scalable approach to generating high-quality content.

Simplifying the Affiliate Outreach Process
TikTok Shop offers a unique advantage by making it easy for brands to find and reach out to affiliates. Setting up a page and adding products is a straightforward process, and brands can quickly connect with smaller affiliates to create content for their products. This streamlined approach to affiliate marketing allows brands to build relationships with creators and scale their presence on the platform efficiently.

Harnessing the Power of Attribution and Analytics
One of the key benefits of TikTok Shop is its ability to provide precise attribution and analytics. Unlike Google, which relies on broad keyword searches, TikTok Shop offers exact answers and visualizes content performance, enabling brands to track the success of their campaigns and make data-driven decisions. By leveraging these insights, brands can optimize their strategies and allocate resources effectively.

Navigating Logistics and Fulfillment Challenges
While TikTok Shop presents significant opportunities, brands must also be prepared to address potential challenges in logistics and fulfillment. Mina discusses the importance of efficient shipping practices and the need to avoid violations when using Amazon for fulfillment. As brands scale their presence on TikTok Shop, it's crucial to have robust systems in place to manage inventory and ensure timely delivery to customers.

Conclusion
TikTok Shop represents a powerful platform for brands looking to expand their reach, engage with a younger audience, and drive sales through innovative content creation and affiliate marketing. By setting up a strong foundation on Amazon, crafting compelling product narratives, leveraging internal affiliates, and harnessing the power of attribution and analytics, brands can unlock the full potential of TikTok Shop and achieve significant growth and profitability.

BACKGROUND:

Forget relying solely on traditional e-commerce platforms like Amazon. The future of online retail belongs to social commerce, with TikTok Shop leading the charge.

TikTok Shop is where brands can tap into a massive, engaged audience and drive sales through authentic, user-generated content.

If brands pay attention, they can transform their e-commerce strategy and not only generate demand but also build brand awareness and loyalty on a platform that resonates with younger consumers.

Old E-commerce:

Here are my 6 recommendations:

  1. Set up your TikTok Shop account and populate it with your key products. Ensure you have high-quality images, titles, bullet points, and category information.

  2. Identify and reach out to relevant TikTok affiliates who can create authentic, engaging content showcasing your products. Aim for 50-100 pieces of content per month.

  3. Offer affiliates incentives like deep discounts or commissions to encourage high-quality content creation that effectively represents your brand.

  5. Leverage tools like Fastmos to analyze competitor performance, identify top affiliates, and gain insights to inform your strategy.

  6. Track affiliate sales and conversion rates to optimize your approach and build relationships with top-performing creators who resonate with your brand.

I believe investing time and resources into TikTok Shop will yield significant returns for brands in terms of sales, brand awareness, and customer loyalty.

To maximize this synergy, brands should maintain a strong presence on both platforms, leveraging Amazon's reliability and consumer trust while tapping into TikTok Shop's younger audience and engaging video content format. By strategically integrating efforts across both platforms, brands can capture a wider audience and benefit from the unique strengths of each marketplace.

  1. Use data-driven tools to analyze competitors and affiliates

Making informed decisions about product offerings and affiliate partnerships is crucial for success on TikTok Shop. Mina Elias recommends using Fastmos, an insights tool available on the platform, to analyze competitor products, identify top-performing content, and evaluate affiliate performance.

By leveraging this data, brands can gain valuable insights into what works well in their niche and identify opportunities for improvement. While quality content is essential for success on TikTok Shop, Mina Elias cautions against overengineering the content creation process. The TikTok audience values authenticity and relatability, and overly scripted or polished content often fails to resonate with viewers.

Instead of aiming for perfection, brands should encourage affiliates to showcase products in a genuine, organic manner that aligns with the platform's style. This may involve providing affiliates with creative freedom and trusting them to represent the brand in a way that feels authentic to their own voice and audience.

Brands should focus on building relationships with affiliates who understand the brand's values and can effectively communicate them through their content. By prioritizing authenticity and collaboration, companies can create content that truly connects with the TikTok audience and drives engagement and sales on the platform.

Success Strategies
  1. Capitalize on the synergy between Amazon and TikTok Shop

As e-commerce continues to evolve, brands must adapt to new platforms and opportunities while maintaining a strong presence on established marketplaces like Amazon. Mina Elias emphasizes the importance of capitalizing on the synergy between Amazon and TikTok Shop to maximize sales and profitability.

By leveraging TikTok Shop's unique features, such as engaging video content and affiliate marketing, brands can drive external traffic to their Amazon listings, ultimately improving organic rankings and sales. This cross-platform approach allows companies to tap into TikTok Shop's younger, trend-conscious audience while benefiting from Amazon's reputation for reliability and customer trust.

To effectively harness this synergy, brands should develop a cohesive strategy that integrates efforts across both platforms. This may involve using TikTok Shop to showcase products in action, build brand awareness, and drive traffic to Amazon listings, while simultaneously optimizing Amazon product pages for conversions and customer satisfaction. By recognizing and capitalizing on the complementary nature of these platforms, brands can expand their reach, engage new audiences, and ultimately boost their bottom line.

  1. Use data-driven tools to analyze competitors and affiliates

In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, data-driven decision-making is essential for staying ahead of the competition and optimizing marketing efforts. Mina Elias highlights the value of using insights tools like Fastmos on TikTok Shop to analyze competitor products, identify top-performing content, and evaluate affiliate performance.

By leveraging this data, brands can gain a deeper understanding of their niche, identify trends and opportunities, and make informed decisions about product development, content strategies, and affiliate partnerships. This information can guide brands in creating products that resonate with their target audience, crafting engaging content that drives sales, and identifying top-performing affiliates to collaborate with.

In addition to analyzing competitor and affiliate data, brands should also track their own performance metrics, such as sales, conversion rates, and customer feedback. By regularly monitoring and evaluating these indicators, companies can identify areas for improvement, optimize their strategies, and ensure they are meeting the evolving needs and preferences of their audience.

Ultimately, by embracing a data-driven approach to e-commerce, brands can make more informed, strategic decisions that drive growth, profitability, and long-term success on platforms like TikTok Shop and beyond.

  1. Avoid overengineering your TikTok content

While creating high-quality content is crucial for success on TikTok Shop, Mina Elias warns against the pitfalls of overengineering the content creation process. The TikTok audience values authenticity, relatability, and genuine engagement, and overly polished or scripted content often fails to connect with viewers on a meaningful level.

To create content that resonates with the TikTok community, brands should focus on fostering authentic partnerships with affiliates who align with their values and can effectively represent the brand in their own unique style. This may involve providing affiliates with creative freedom and trusting them to showcase products in a way that feels organic and true to their own voice and audience.

By prioritizing authenticity and collaboration over perfection, brands can create content that not only showcases their products but also builds genuine connections with the TikTok audience. This approach can lead to increased engagement, trust, and ultimately, sales on the platform.

However, it's important to strike a balance between authenticity and brand consistency. While encouraging affiliates to bring their own creativity to the table, brands should still provide guidance and ensure that content aligns with their overall brand identity and messaging. By working closely with affiliates and maintaining open lines of communication, companies can ensure that their TikTok Shop presence remains both authentic and on-brand.

In summary, by avoiding the temptation to overengineer content and instead focusing on authentic, collaborative partnerships with affiliates, brands can create a strong, engaging presence on TikTok Shop that drives results and resonates with the platform's unique audience.

Success Strategies
  1. Capitalize on the synergy between Amazon and TikTok Shop

In the rapidly evolving landscape of e-commerce, brands must be agile and adaptable to succeed. As new platforms like TikTok Shop emerge, it's essential to recognize and capitalize on the potential synergies with established marketplaces like Amazon. Mina Elias emphasizes the importance of leveraging the unique strengths of each platform to maximize sales, profitability, and brand exposure.

TikTok Shop offers brands a powerful opportunity to engage with a younger, trend-conscious audience through dynamic video content and affiliate marketing. By showcasing products in action, collaborating with influential creators, and tapping into the platform's viral potential, brands can drive significant traffic and sales. However, as Mina points out, this success on TikTok Shop can also have a positive halo effect on a brand's Amazon presence.

By strategically directing TikTok Shop traffic to Amazon listings, brands can improve their organic rankings, boost sales, and establish a stronger overall e-commerce presence. This cross-platform approach allows companies to benefit from Amazon's reputation for reliability, customer trust, and streamlined fulfillment, while simultaneously leveraging TikTok Shop's unique engagement and discovery features.

To effectively harness this synergy, brands must develop a cohesive, integrated strategy that aligns efforts across both platforms. This may involve optimizing TikTok Shop content to drive traffic to Amazon listings, using Amazon product pages as a foundation for TikTok Shop product information, and ensuring a seamless customer experience across both platforms. By recognizing the complementary nature of TikTok Shop and Amazon and developing a unified approach, brands can expand their reach, engage new audiences, and ultimately drive significant growth and success in the e-commerce space.

  1. Use data-driven tools to analyze competitors and affiliates

In the highly competitive world of e-commerce, making informed, data-driven decisions is crucial for staying ahead of the curve and optimizing marketing efforts. Mina Elias emphasizes the importance of leveraging insights tools, such as Fastmos on TikTok Shop, to gain a deep understanding of the competitive landscape, identify top-performing content, and evaluate affiliate performance.

By analyzing competitor products, brands can identify trends, gaps in the market, and opportunities for differentiation. This information can guide product development efforts, helping brands create offerings that resonate with their target audience and stand out in a crowded marketplace. Additionally, by studying competitors' top-performing content, brands can gain valuable insights into the types of videos, themes, and storytelling techniques that engage and convert viewers on TikTok Shop.

Data-driven analysis is also essential for optimizing affiliate partnerships on TikTok Shop. By evaluating affiliate performance metrics, such as sales, conversion rates, and engagement, brands can identify their most effective partners and focus their efforts on nurturing those relationships. This targeted approach ensures that brands are allocating their resources efficiently and maximizing the impact of their affiliate marketing initiatives.

In addition to leveraging third-party tools, brands should also closely monitor their own performance data, including sales, customer feedback, and user behavior on TikTok Shop and Amazon. By regularly analyzing and acting upon these insights, companies can identify areas for improvement, refine their strategies, and adapt to the evolving needs and preferences of their audience.

Ultimately, by embracing a data-driven approach to e-commerce and leveraging the wealth of insights available through platforms like TikTok Shop, brands can make more informed, strategic decisions that drive growth, profitability, and long-term success. As Mina Elias highlights, the ability to effectively analyze and act upon competitor and affiliate data is a key differentiator in the fast-paced, ever-changing world of online retail.

  1. Avoid overengineering your TikTok content

While creating high-quality, engaging content is essential for success on TikTok Shop, Mina Elias cautions against the temptation to overengineer the content creation process. The TikTok audience is known for its appetite for authentic, relatable, and often raw content that feels genuine and unfiltered. Overly polished, scripted, or corporate-feeling videos often fail to connect with this audience on a meaningful level, undermining the brand's ability to build trust and drive engagement on the platform.

To create content that truly resonates with the TikTok community, brands must prioritize authenticity and collaboration above all else. This means partnering with affiliates and creators who align with the brand's values, understand its target audience, and can effectively represent the brand in their own unique, authentic style. By providing these partners with the creative freedom to showcase products in a way that feels organic and true to their own voice, brands can tap into the power of user-generated content and influencer marketing on TikTok Shop.

However, it's important to recognize that authenticity does not mean sacrificing brand consistency or quality. While encouraging affiliates to bring their own creativity and personality to the table, brands must still provide clear guidelines and ensure that all content aligns with their overall brand identity, messaging, and values. This balance can be achieved through open communication, collaboration, and a shared understanding of the brand's goals and target audience.

Moreover, brands should approach TikTok Shop content creation with a spirit of experimentation and learning. The platform's algorithms and user preferences are constantly evolving, and what works today may not work tomorrow. By embracing a more agile, iterative approach to content creation and being willing to test new ideas, formats, and partnerships, brands can stay ahead of the curve and continuously refine their TikTok Shop strategy.

In summary, as Mina Elias emphasizes, the key to success on TikTok Shop is to avoid the pitfalls of overengineering content and instead focus on fostering authentic, collaborative relationships with affiliates and creators. By striking the right balance between creativity and brand consistency, and being willing to experiment and adapt, brands can create a strong, engaging presence on TikTok Shop that drives results and resonates with the platform's unique, dynamic audience.

Success Strategies

Here are 3 strategies for DTC success based on insights from Mina Elias:

  1. Leverage TikTok Shop for expanded reach and engagement

TikTok Shop presents a unique opportunity for DTC brands to connect with a younger, highly engaged audience. By setting up a TikTok Shop page and partnering with affiliates to create authentic, compelling video content, brands can tap into the platform's vast user base and drive sales.

Mina suggests starting with a modest budget of around $1,000 per month for newer brands and scaling up to $5,000 or more for established brands. This approach allows for testing and refining content strategies without overextending resources.

  1. Utilize competitor analysis tools to identify top performers

Tools like Fastmos provide valuable insights into competitor performance on TikTok Shop, enabling brands to identify top-selling products, successful content strategies, and high-performing affiliates.

By analyzing this data, brands can make informed decisions about product offerings, content creation, and affiliate partnerships. Mina recommends reaching out to top affiliates and offering attractive incentives, such as deep discounts or commissions, to secure high-quality content that effectively represents the brand.

  1. Maximize the Amazon-TikTok Shop synergy for improved profitability

Leveraging TikTok Shop alongside an established Amazon presence can lead to a positive halo effect on overall profitability. By driving external traffic from TikTok to Amazon listings, brands can improve sales and organic ranking on the marketplace.

Mina emphasizes the importance of maintaining efficient fulfillment practices and adherence to platform guidelines to ensure a seamless customer experience across both channels. As TikTok Shop continues to evolve, brands should stay attuned to potential integrations and opportunities to further optimize this multi-platform approach.
