Hey. Hey. Hey, digital entrepreneurs. You're tuned in to another power packed episode of Invest in Yourself, the digital entrepreneur podcast. I am Phil Bennet, the podcast mogul, and I have got a guest who is not just an attorney for over a decade, but a serial entrepreneur with a resume that reads like a business success story. At the tender age of 30, our guests acquired their first company followed by another at 33, but that just wasn't enough for them. They took the plunge into startups determining to learn from the ground up and avoid the pitfalls others had stumbled into. Fast forward 30 year plus years, and they're gearing up to launch yet another venture.
Speaker B
00:00:57 - 00:01:27

Merri-jo Hillaker
00:02:17 - 00:02:25
Just answer one question for you right now because you built me up to have all these hundred things going on. Right? So let me just give the audience one clue right here.
Speaker B
00:02:25 - 00:02:25
Yes, please.
Merri-jo Hillaker
00:02:25 - 00:02:50
Time is your only limited asset. Money's everywhere, so look at your time and choose wisely how you spend your time. And when you do that, now you can create everything I'm talking about because every time I create something, I'll find somebody else to run it or I'll find something else to do here. So it's it's applying all the principles. My time is my only limited asset.
Speaker B
00:02:50 - 00:03:07
Oh, I like that. That's a genius. So first of all, I wanna know how did you start becoming an entrepreneur? And, like, why did you become an entrepreneur? What was it that just decided, hey, I'm gonna become an entrepreneur because you were an attorney beforehand. Correct?
Merri-jo Hillaker
00:03:07 - 00:03:36
Yes. In fact, I was very successful. I was in a huge law firm, Foley and Lardner for 3 years. A internationally publicly traded company came along. I did some work for them, and and they hired me away as vice president general counsel at the right age of 28 years old. So here I was in this huge now a lot of people would say, you're set for life. Oh my gosh. I mean, I I could have been if I sold out Mary Jo, but I wasn't gonna sell out myself.
Merri-jo Hillaker
00:03:36 - 00:04:36
So you can be in those plum jobs making tons of money, but if you're not totally happy, if you're not experiencing joy every day, you haven't found who you are and what's gonna make you happy. And that's what sent me on this, I'm out of here. I'm gonna do some work on myself, do some discovery about what's really gonna make me happy. And probably the number one discovery was, what are my core values? Who am I? Because each of us have different sets of core values. So that's one of my favorite discovery projects I do with most people I work with in coaching is find out who you are first, because I can tell you all the great ways of being a great lawyer and bring head of companies and start your own company, but that may not be you. I want you to be the best you, and that's where you're gonna have the greatest joy. So that's my my heart and passion today is really help people to discover themselves. What are your if you can't answer the question, what are your core values, then you're gonna stay stuck.
Speaker B
00:04:38 - 00:04:52
Oh, I I'm I'm excited because then I know this conversation is gonna be, amazing. So at the right by age of 28, you were you were big big in the law firms and hired out, to be general of of advice.
Merri-jo Hillaker
00:04:52 - 00:04:54
