Investing in Yourself: The Power of Entrepreneurship and Caregiving with Michael George

Summary: This article explores how family caregiver and entrepreneur Michael George turned his personal journey into a thriving support system for others, proving that the ultimate entrepreneurial investment begins within yourself.

The Entrepreneur’s Greatest Asset: Themselves

If there’s one thing every entrepreneur should write down and stick to their bathroom mirror, it’s this: no investment pays off like the one you make in yourself. I’ve seen thousands of innovators come and go, and the ones who succeed keep turning the same lever—the drive to keep learning, growing, and fighting through the walls. That’s the recurring theme from this week’s “Invest In Yourself: The Digital Entrepreneur Podcast,” featuring Michael George, founder of Soaring Families.

Turning Adversity Into a Legacy

I was struck by George’s down-to-earth candor. The man spent 30 years as a family caregiver—no easy road—and emerged, not only unbroken but stronger for it. When his son Ben was born with complex care needs, Michael and his wife were blindsided. As Michael put it, “It was, you know, you’re thrown at a deep end and there’s a tsunami coming at you at the same time.” Instead of buckling under, he turned this adversity into a personal mission, co-founding Soaring Families in 2015 to support fellow caregivers.

Putting People First: The Entrepreneur’s Team

Now, entrepreneurs know a thing or two about building teams, but Michael is doing it with stakes that go well beyond quarterly earnings. “Caregiving is not a solo act. And so building a team around you, even if it’s just a team of one or two people to support...is what made everything. It was a complete game changer.” If you’re running a business—especially one close to your heart—remember, you can’t wear every hat forever. As Michael sees it, “You don’t have to be all things to all people. Knowing how to find the right people and place them in your business at the right time is what kind of makes it work.”

Creating Something the World Needs

Every entrepreneur, at some point, has asked, “Will people actually want this?” Michael put it plainly: “Do we have enough time to do that? Do we even have the knowledge to do that in, you know, in an effective way?” The answer: self-doubt is normal; persistence is key. Like Michael, entrepreneurs should not wait for outside help or government handouts. “It’s more the stand on your own and good luck to you,” he says. Instead, serve your people, and the rest will follow.

Self-Care: The Ultimate Investment

You can’t help others if you’re running on empty. Whether you’re coding a software app, running a startup, or supporting a loved one, Michael’s advice is indispensable: “The biggest thing for me is making sure that I get enough rest...your body keeps score about everything, whether you want it to or not.” Entrepreneurs, take note—burnout is real. If you don’t invest in your own energy and wellbeing, nobody else will.

Final Word

In the race to build, grow, and hustle, don’t forget the core message of this episode: your best business investment really is yourself. As Michael George reminds us, “Be open to what comes your way and not try to force things.” Keep the faith, keep learning, and remember—sometimes, our toughest challenges create the greatest legacies. Until next time, keep taking care of yourself… and don’t forget to invest in your own potential.

### Chapter Eight: Be Open to What Comes
When I was ten years old, I thought I had life pretty much figured out. I had big plans and dreams, and I was sure I knew exactly what the future would look like. Maybe you feel that way, too—maybe you look ahead and imagine how everything’s going to work out, like a story you can write from the first page to the last.
But life can surprise you. Sometimes, things don’t go the way you planned. Maybe you try your hardest and something still goes wrong. Maybe something wonderful appears out of nowhere. Maybe, like me, something comes along that changes everything—something you never expected, and definitely didn’t plan.
If I could speak to my ten-year-old self, this is what I would say:
**Be open to what comes your way. Don’t try to force everything to go one way.**
It’s easy to grow up thinking that there’s a certain “right” path for everyone. People might tell you there are steps you have to follow to have a happy life—go to this school, get that job, check off certain boxes. But real life is wilder, messier, and sometimes far more amazing than any box-ticking plan.
Sometimes something will come along that feels hard or unfair or scary. At first, you might not understand why it’s happening to you. You might even feel sad or confused or a little angry. That’s okay—those feelings are normal. What matters most is how you handle what comes next.
Instead of worrying about what could have been or wishing things were different, try this:
**Be open. Be curious. Let new experiences in, even the ones you didn’t expect or ask for.**
When you are open, you notice the good things hiding inside moments that are difficult. You can’t always see the gifts life hands you when you’re busy wishing things were different. Sometimes what doesn’t seem like a gift at all can become the thing that helps you grow the most, brings you closer to people you love, or helps you discover a part of yourself that is stronger than you knew.
So, ten-year-old me—and you, reading this chapter—don’t carry guilt, or shame, or regret when life changes your plans. Welcome new things, even if they look strange or hard. Stay hopeful. You’ll be surprised at how much you can handle, how strong you really are, and where the journey might take you.
Remember, it’s not about having everything figured out. It’s about being brave enough to keep your heart open for all the adventures that come your way. That’s how you make a life that’s truly your own.

**Investing in Yourself as a Caregiver & Entrepreneur: My Conversation with Michael George**
In my latest episode of "Invest In Yourself: The Digital Entrepreneur Podcast," I sat down with Michael George—a coach, author, international speaker, and someone who’s spent over 30 years as a family caregiver. Michael’s journey through the highs and lows of caregiving for his son Ben (and founding Soaring Families) is a reminder that the entrepreneurial spirit isn’t just about building a business, but also about building communities of support—at home *and* at work.
**What stood out:**
Michael’s most powerful lesson? *Caregiving is not a solo act.* The very skills that make great entrepreneurs—building a team, asking for help, and embracing vulnerability—are the same tools that can transform the caregiving journey from overwhelming isolation to one of community and empowerment.
**Actionable takeaway:**
Whether you’re a caregiver, entrepreneur, or both, **start building your support team today**. Don’t do it alone—identify *one person* (a friend, family member, or professional) you can reach out to this week for support or collaboration. This single step can combat burnout, provide clarity, and launch huge change in both your business and home life.
Are you balancing entrepreneurship and caregiving? What’s worked for you—or where are you struggling with support?
**Comment ‘link’ below and I’ll send you the episode!** Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other invest in ourselves—at work, at home, and everywhere in between.
