Something went wrong!
Hang in there while we get back on track

Okay, so let's get started. My name is George Headley. If you don't know, you're in the niche, like a fish course. And we're gonna get going here. So how many people are here this morning? This afternoon, whatever day it is, not everybody. How many people are here today? Okay, I've been using that opening line for 40 years and it never doesn't work, so don't steal it. How many people are speakers, boy? Or if you're full of energy, professional speakers, Full time speakers. You're not sure.

00:00:38 - 00:01:12
You're not even sure why you're here. So anyway, I'm from Newport Beach, California. Anybody else from out of town? Oh God, this is a good. This is way beyond my capacity to accomplish this. Okay, so today I've got a little outline here. Today we have a semi motivational generalist speaker who'll share what works once in a while. Okay, so I'm a very niched speaker. So I'm going to talk a lot about niche.

00:01:12 - 00:01:26
Not saying it's the only way to go. It's the way that I go. Good and bad. I could give you the good and the bad and the ugly, but so quickly. Here's the view. We got one hour, so 4 o'. Clock. Welcome, welcome.
George Hedley, CSP
00:01:27 - 00:01:48
Thanks for the no intro. We're going to learn stuff. Then we're going to get how to learn how to get rich. And then you're going to all buy my book and then you're going to keep your day job. Okay. After you learn everything. All right, so as you notice, I always use notes. I've done over 500 programs using notes.
George Hedley, CSP
00:01:48 - 00:02:09
Nobody's ever not paid me because I use notes. So I don't memorize. But once I get rolling, I get going. But I always have my notes handy. So Anyway, think back 30, 40 years ago. That's when I got into this business. Speaking. I came to my NSA convention.
George Hedley, CSP
00:02:09 - 00:02:33
I don't remember. I went on the Southern California chapter in 1990 something. I don't remember. And can anybody remember back to 1977? 1990. Some of you don't even know what I'm talking about. We didn't have fax machines back then. Remember that? So you know, we didn't have Excel. We had to use like we had to add.
George Hedley, CSP
00:02:34 - 00:03:11
My first job was an engineer. All I had was a slide row. So anyway, K and H, remember those? But anyway, so the year was 1977. I made a big decision to start my own business. I said, sure, like to start my own business. But I think It's a little risky. So how many of you think starting your own business is smart? And you told your family that you're going into the business, right? They go, isn't that a little risky? How are you going to pay the bills? Well, I already had a business, so it wasn't that hard. But we were talking about that at lunch.
George Hedley, CSP
00:03:11 - 00:03:46
And so the year was 1977. After graduating, five years after graduating from the University of Southern California, home of great, great people, winners, champions, graduating in the top 100% of my class. Best 6, 7, 8 years of my life. Boy, my parents were proud when I graduated after way too many years. No, I actually graduated in four and a half years. So five years later, I started my own construction business. Now, I'm not here to talk about construction, but I just want to tell you. So I was in search of the great opportunity.

00:03:46 - 00:04:12
United States of America, land of opportunity. The only place you can start out as a manager, an executive, a business owner, if you don't mind the loss of income. Right, Speakers? Yeah. Yeah. So it's hard to start with no cash. So think about what's the easiest way to open your own business. So I had pretty much all the tools I needed. I had a hard hat with my name engraved on it.
George Hedley, CSP
00:04:12 - 00:04:45
I had a used orange Datsun pickup truck with 92,000 miles on it. There it is. Had a Coleman ice chest in the back. I had a golden laboratory retriever with a bandana, a big radio that you could boombox out on the job site. Pretty much everything you needed to be a success in the construction business. What today I call a Chuck stuck in a truck with the phone in the no profit zone. So that's what I call it. So I had everything I needed to be a success.
