Larry King-Style Look: Entrepreneurs, Listen Up!

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after decades of talking to some of the world’s most remarkable minds, it’s this: Success hinges on betting big—on yourself. On this week’s episode of “Invest In Yourself: The Digital Entrepreneur Podcast,” host Phil Better sat across from Sean Tepper, a man who traded two decades of corporate comfort for the wild, thrilling world of entrepreneurship. The insights? Pure gold for anyone thinking about investing in themselves as an entrepreneur.

From Cubicle Blues to Global SaaS Success

Tepper’s story is a wakeup call for those feeling stuck in corporate routines and dreaming bigger. “I always wanted to be an entrepreneur,” Tepper admits. After years at companies like GE and Direct Supply, he felt the pull for something scalable—a business that thrived on his hard-earned knowledge and delivered real freedom. The result was Ticker, a fintech SaaS platform now serving over 13,000 customers in 50 countries.

Don’t Settle—Act, Even if It’s Imperfect

One of the lasting lessons from Sean? Perfection is overrated. “Perfect is the enemy of good,” he told Phil. Sean’s first product version for Ticker was “terribly ugly,” but he pressed on, focusing on action over polish. “Just put one foot in front of the other... always be moving forward,” he shares. This philosophy—break the inertia and do the boring work, day in and day out—is where entrepreneurial value begins.

Craft Your Own Safety Net: Learn While You Earn

“Be an ethical spy,” advises Tepper, revealing how he spent 12 extra years in the corporate world learning the strategies behind big deals, contracts, and negotiations. Instead of going through the motions, he took notes, asked tough questions, and treated every job as a crash course for his future venture. It’s a playbook move for anyone ready to invest in themselves as an entrepreneur: use your day job as your training ground.

Investing in Yourself Isn’t Just Money—It’s Mindset

Tepper’s investment wasn’t simply monetary; it was mental. “You need to move forward with high conviction, make decisions quickly and go,” he explains. Decision paralysis is the silent killer of entrepreneurial dreams. Whether it’s firing an unhelpful partner or reimagining product strategy, Sean preaches execution, resilience, and the courage to keep swinging, regardless of the outcome.

The Power of Partnerships—and Playing the Long Game

For those seeking rapid growth, Sean uncovered one of the biggest secrets: “Where the real money is made is with channel partners.” Rather than splashing out on ads or social media, he praises the growth from affiliate deals, partnerships, and building SEO patiently over years. If you want your business to scale, look for allies—not just audiences.

Final Word: Start Now, Don’t Settle

Sean’s advice to a younger self—and to all of us—is simple: “Know what you want and don’t settle.” Invest in your skills, fail forward, and layer up your confidence before making big leaps. Whether you’re 10 or 40, there’s no better time to bet on yourself, learn relentlessly, and surround yourself with partners who help you win.

10 year old advice

**Chapter Seven: Advice to My 10-Year-Old Self**
Imagine for a moment, you're standing in your bedroom, surrounded by your favorite toys, maybe a poster or two on the wall of your favorite heroes. Out of nowhere, an older you—grown-up, with a few more stories and lessons—sits down beside you. What would you ask? And more importantly, what advice would this older, wiser you want to share?
Today, let's pretend that's exactly what's happening. I'm going to share with you some advice I wish I could send back in time to myself when I was just 10 years old, and who knows, maybe it's exactly what you need to hear right now.
**1. Know What You Want and Don’t Settle**
The first thing I'd tell my 10-year-old self is this: figure out what really excites you. Is it building things? Math puzzles? Drawing? Sports? Don't let anyone else's dreams or routines push you into a life of "just okay." It's easy to set your goals aside and think, "I'll just stick with what everyone else is doing." But the happiest, most successful people I've met are the ones who simply never settled—they kept searching, trying, and learning until they found the thing that truly made them jump out of bed each morning. That's who you can be too!
So, even when you get older and people start telling you to just “play it safe,” don’t give up on what makes you curious or excited. Knowing what you want is the first step to making it happen.
**2. Be Patient—Great Things Take Time**
Sometimes, what you want most—whether it's a dream job, a best friend, or even getting really good at something—takes longer than you hope. That’s normal. I didn’t find my dream job or the person I wanted to spend my life with until much later than most people. And you know what? That’s perfectly okay. Sometimes good things come to those who wait (and work for it!), so don’t feel upset if something important takes longer than you thought. Keep going, and know that you’re building something great, even if it’s one day at a time.
**3. Start Investing Early—Even a Little Counts**
Now, this one’s a little more practical, but it’s super important: If you learn about money while you’re young, and start saving and investing even small amounts, you'll be amazed at what can happen! Maybe you get birthday money, or you help out around the house or with neighbors and earn a little extra—put a bit of that aside for the future, and when you’re old enough, consider learning about investing. Even tiny amounts can grow into something huge over many years! Imagine what life would be like if you started today, while most people wait until they’re adults.
**4. Believe in Yourself—You’re Capable of Amazing Things**
Last but not least, never forget to believe in yourself. It sounds simple, but it's true. There will be days where you don’t feel confident, or where things don’t go your way. That’s normal. Even adults feel that sometimes. What matters is that you keep moving forward, even on the tough days. Trust that you’re learning, growing, and becoming the kind of person who can do hard things. And when you find something you want, chase it. Don’t settle.
Remember, you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to be willing to try, to learn from your mistakes, and to keep believing that amazing things can happen—because they absolutely can, especially for you.
---
So, 10-year-old me—and every kid reading this—these are the words I wish I'd heard. Set your sights high, have the patience to keep going, be smart with your money, and most of all, never stop believing in yourself. Your adventure is just getting started.
